Q1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Conventions I followed in the teaser trailer, is the sound effects which were used, especially at the end of the trailer which was inspired by the Devil Trailer ending. Starting from 2:03 in the Devil trailer there is a continuation of a elevator sound, while there is no background noise from the film, which creates suspense atmosphere. We tried to include this in our own ending with using our Blackberry noise with no background noise also.

The horror trailer ‘REC’ also gives a good example of the convention, which we followed, at the end of our teaser trailer with the use of our sound effect, without any background noise as this trailer uses this convention throughout their teaser trailer.
|
We also thought not to add the conventions of the ‘screaming victim’ at the end as we thought it was too cliché to have in our trailer and thought instead we would develop this convention to have a sound effect which faded out with the title of the movie which leaves out audience on a cliff hanger. An example of this is in the psychological horror trailer ‘Donnie Darko’ staring from 1.58 in the trailer the title of the film faded in accompanied by a sound effect.

Another convention we followed in the trailer was the continuation of text to film in the trailer, which we got from another psychological horror trailer called ‘The Cabinet of Dr.Caligari’. Which shows a good example of what conventions we followed to a certain extent. Although we thought we would develop this convention by having text overlaid a plain background wouldn’t keep our audience interested to read the text, so we added an animated background with overlaid text which we thought would keep our audience more attracted to read the text.
|
We also developed conventions of camera techniques from the horror film ‘Paranomal Activity 3’, which use the camera technique of a camcorder. Although we developed this convention and edited our trailer with a camcorder effect presets available in Final Cut Pro.
We also challenged the convention of not having any voiceover from our actor during the trailer; instead we had background noise and sound effects throughout the whole of our teaser trailer.

We followed the convention with the film ‘Buried’. With the use of using not just a using blackberry in our film, but using a phone, which is commonly used and popular in today’s society. We also developed this convention by using blackberry USP, BBM instead of text or a phone call for the concept of our trailer. Another convention we followed from ‘Buried’ in our
trailer is the constant interaction and link between the actor and the mobile
phone. Although we developed this convention further by making the interaction
and link between the actor and mobile phone the main concept for our film.

Buried’ also show a great example of the conventions we followed during the first half of our trailer. As both of our actors in the trailer are shown in a confined space, trapped in somewhere beyond there knowledge.
‘Buried’ also shows the convention we used of having the continuation from text to film. We followed ‘Buried’ conventions of having a animated background overlaid with text as watching the trailer as part of our research we found made us as the audience more interested to read the overlaid text.
